Several Virginia police departments and sheriff’s offices provide publicly accessible online tools for checking active arrest warrants, capiases, and other outstanding criminal papers. The links below were individually verified as active and lead directly to an official search tool or a current warrant report.

York County and the City of Poquoson are served by the same sheriff’s office and therefore share one warrant report. The York-Poquoson reports page can be used to locate the newest report if the dated link changes.

How to search these records

Most of the interactive databases allow searches by first name, last name, or both. Some accept partial names.

Danville and York-Poquoson publish their results as PDF reports. On a computer, use Ctrl+F on Windows or Command+F on a Mac to search the document for a name.

The Norfolk and Newport News systems also allow users to filter or download warrant records.

Important limitations

The Botetourt County, Franklin, Henry County, and Warren County systems are labeled “Criminal Papers Search.” These databases can include warrants and capiases as well as summonses, protective orders, and other unserved papers. Check the listed paper type and offense carefully.

An online search should not be treated as a definitive legal determination. A warrant may have been issued, withdrawn, served, sealed, or excluded from public display after the database was updated. Some agencies also withhold sensitive warrants and records connected with ongoing investigations.

Anyone who believes they may have an active warrant should confirm the information with the appropriate police department, sheriff’s office, court clerk, or a Virginia attorney.
